The lessons to learn from the garden in the sky
Oh dear – sometimes gardens just don’t go to plan when they’re left in the wrong hands.
This is the message being sent out by national newspaper the Guardian, after their scathing review of the newly opened Sky Garden, a luxury complex located at the heart of London.
Intended to give a dazzling 360 degree view of the city as you luxuriated in floral wonder, architect critic Oliver Wainwright has, instead, claimed, “It feels a lot like being in an airport terminal, jacked up in the air.”
Wainwright’s scathing piece goes on to state that the garden, initially proposed in glitzy computer designs (a combination of Eden and The Shard,) is “mysteriously absent”. Replacing it are two sloped areas featuring a few trees and flowers. In Wainwright’s summation, it’s “more like a hotel lobby than Kew Gardens”.
The Guardian’s less than glowing criticism points to an important issue – when a garden isn’t tackled properly, it becomes less soothing haven and more horticultural horror.
