The Most Pleasant Scents In The World

There’s nothing better than waking up with your favourite smell teasing your nostrils. You might have freshly cleaned laundry hanging in the hallway or grass trimmings wafting in from the garden – either way, your spirits are lifted almost instantly.

What if you could give your customers that same feeling? Just imagine the pleasant surprise they’ll get when they walk into your business to find a stunning aroma awaiting them.

But what smells should you try?

Freshly baked bread

That succulent scent of bread wafting from a bakery at six in the morning is the equivalent to a gentle hug for some people. But it isn’t just pleasant – according to The Daily Mail, it can also make us kinder.

Researchers from the University of Southern Brittany in France found that people were more likely to help passers-by on the street if the delicious smell of baked goods was nearby.

“Our results show that, in general, spontaneous help is offered more in areas where pleasant ambient smells are spread,” claimed one of the researchers.

A pot of coffee

Whether you live on eight cups a day or a single espresso jolt, the smell of coffee is the ideal wakeup call for many. In fact, more than £730 million was spent on coffee last year in Britain.

And these sales are intrinsically tied to the pungent scent created by that beautiful brown liquid. The smell of coffee alone can be enough to make the brain more alert, largely thanks to the heterocyclic compounds it contains.

With a whiff of coffee, the mind triggers a pavlovian response as it expects its next injection of revitalising caffeine. So, put on a pot to give your customers a boost.

Sandalwood

In one of the earliest examples of a scent marketing strategy, clothing retailer Abercrombie and Fitch became renowned for pumping the smell of sandalwood into their stores, contributing to their widespread success and giving customers a lifelong association between that lingering smell and the retailer.

In many ways, Abercrombie and Fitch is the ideal poster-company for the effectiveness of scent marketing. Supposedly, their smelly strategy was so effective that some customers even tried to return clothing after the sandalwood smell had faded.

No matter what business you’re in, a pleasant smell can do wonders for your profits margins. So, have a look at our scent strategies to see how you can improve your business.
