Ambius brings the Exotic to Edinburgh
Edinburgh University’s Potterrow Site gets the Green Treatment
Ambius, the world leader in enhancing buildings through planting, scenting and artwork, has brought a hint of the exotic to the students at Edinburgh University with a stunning array of palms at the Potterrow site in central Edinburgh. Students can now relax in comfort in the newly refurbished Students Union building where the interior planting schemes, designed and installed by Ambius take centre stage.
The coveted contract for landscaping installation and maintenance was won by Ambius on the basis of its award-winning design and maintenance of skills for interior planting schemes. The planting forms a key element of the major refurbishment of the Edinburgh University Students Union building. Potterrow is now a refreshing and completely modernised space creating the perfect atmosphere for students to enjoy some ‘down time’ in between lectures following the refurbishment over the summer holidays.
The striking nature inspired layout features a show stealing selection of exotic Palms standing at an impressive 6m and 4m high taking centre stage in Potterrow. An array of Yuccas and varieties of Ficus complement a mixture of Aglaonema’s, Anthurium’s and Tradescantia’s to complete the range of interior planting at the Edinburgh University Students Union.
Alan Blackwood, Estates Manager at Edinburgh University says, “Ambius has helped bring the newly refurbished space to life and played a big part in creating an environment where students can take time out from their studies for some respite. In what was a particularly challenging brief, Ambius showed their expertise and efficiency working around the builders, completing their part of the installation ahead of schedule. The design scheme complements the refurbishment beautifully and creates a warm and exotic feel to the Students Union building in what was once an outdated, uninspiring space.”
Kenneth Freeman, Ambius International Technical Director says “The project at Potterrow was a great challenge both from a design and logistical point of view. We were certainly kept on our toes and it was great to bring in some elements of biophilia ensuring the space not only looked good but felt good to the students.
“Creating an immediate impact for visitors and employees was central to the refurbishment. the end product is particularly stunning having the design benefits from the exotic interior planting. Plants provide a number of benefits, besides creating a design statement, including their well known therapeutic properties and we are sure the students will enjoy relaxing in such a wonderful space.”
